~from a place so very far away~

A good Wednesday evening to you all from the "other" side of the Continental Divide here in Montrose, Colorado. It's been a good day thus far, this day before Independence Day~the Fourth of July. The haze and smoke from the forest fires still lingers over the San Juan Mountains and the Uncompahgre Range and every day we wait for the hope and chance for some much needed moisture, yet none falls. The wind socks are blowing in the breeze, heading out straight to the south east. The stately Cottonwood tree is providing the "white noise" of the day and for a while earlier, I just sat outside and listened to the sound in peace. If I look hard enough, if my eyes and heart are open enough, I can find something just outside our own front door that is a treat to each of the senses. Sometimes though, in my great hurry I miss out on the obvious things and I'm always glad for the times when I just slow down a bit and see the good that is right before my eyes. ...

~and that was what the planting was all about~

The scraggly green plants had little to show for their more than two months' growth. Certainly when I pulled up the first plant from the straw bale it had been growing in and found little more than a mushy mess instead of a clump of new potatoes, the inevitable seemed to have happened. Plant after plant told the same sad story. Our venture into straw bale gardening had come up short. Really short. Months of watering, watching, and waiting for a bumper crop of potatoes had not worked out. We tried, but in the end one thing was for sure. It was our successful failure. Back in the early days of March, Mike lost his job as the manager of the local hardware store here in town. The day that the door closed for the last time and the store went out of business was the beginning of a different pathway in life for us. The rains came down as promised late in the afternoon here. I was thankful to have planted 14 perennials in front of the house this morning. Now they are receiving the benefit of a good soaking and for that, in the land of the former drought or anywhere else for that matter, we give thanks. It felt good to be digging into the earth and making way for the wide variety of plants that I bought at the hardware store that Mike manages here in Burkburnett. I was happy to see a nice assortment of earthworms that greeted me as I dug into their natural habitat in the red soil of this part of Texas. The ground is healthy here and I knew that it would be good for growing as I watched Mike till it up a few weeks back. It reminded me so much of my old back yard in Hutchinson, Kansas. The dirt there was equally healthy and yielded a wide variety of crops of both the vegetable and floral kind. I like digging in the dirt. Plain and simple. When I was on Whidbe...
